Just a Little Update

I had a doctor appointment on Thursday and here is what I learned. Six years ago I had my first appointment with him and they have me recorded at 432 pounds (Fully clothed and at 9:00am). My blood pressure was 145/90 and my total cholesterol was 305. Thursday, my weight (Late in the day and fully clothed) came in at 298 :) and my blood pressure was 114/68. My total cholesterol is 160 and the ratio of good/bad cholesterol is excellent. He mentioned that since my appointment of a couple months ago for a sore throat that my legs had approximately 50 to 60% less swelling. He noted that is a sign that my insulin resistance is most likely reversing itself. I am scheduled for my A1C blood sugar test in July and it has not been below 5.9 for years, even after losing 80 pounds and eating a low glycemic plan.

He asked me if I had gastric bypass surgery since our appointment for the sore throat. I informed him that I was following a book called Fat to Skinny (Fast and Easy). This brought a smile to his face and he said, I cannot comment on that book, but it is obviously working for you and you should continue. He added, I have never had a patient come back from 400 plus pounds without gastric bypass. In fact, if I recall only one patient has survived more than five years after coming here for the first time being over 400 pounds.

This all has me deep in thought and the only thing that I can think is not very deep or profound. It is the man-child in me dying to get out!

  2. Thanks Amber. I feel much better than I did six-years ago, that is certain. I have so much more energy that "V" wants to have another child!:( I am too old for a newborn... and it would be years younger than my nephews (your) babies. I have to keep "V" from all infants and maybe she will lose the desire for a baby. Must be some type of female mid-life crisis she is having. ;)

  3. Todd-
    A.M.A.Z.I.N.G!! Nothing more to say about you.
    Not that it is any of my business, but I agree with your wife.
    Why not have another baby? I would totally have a newborn at this point in my life....IF I wasn't broken AND I wasn't going to be a granny in the next few days. {I'm hoping that will cure the baby hunger I have felt for the last 13 years!}
    You aren't too old...they say that fit @ fourty-ish is the new thirty-ish!
    Congratulations!

  4. Wendy,

    You are great. Another baby... that is not so great. I have heard Rich and Fifty is Middle Class Thirty, but never heard of Fit and Forty-ish is the new Thirty-ish. Sounds good to me though. However, if I were Rich and Fifty I might consider a baby. Fit and Forty-ish... No Way! :-)

  5. Todd, what exactly do you eat? I'm looking at the F2S book and am a tad bit confused. Let me know some of your menu's ok? Thanks, Friend!

  6. Helen,

    The F2S book for me taught me how to read labels more than anything. I do not really follow the recipes as I am not a big "kitchen-cook" kind of guy. Quick and easy is my method. However, armed with knowing that every "4" carbohydrates is a teaspoon of metabolized sugar, I read labels closely! I have found that if I consume 5 to 8 carbohydrates per day I lose two pounds per week without working out. If I eat fewer carbohydrates or workout the weight loss goes up for the week. Also, be advised that I do not consume more than 1250 calories per day. I have not for more than a year. Even at 1250 or less per day I hit a plateau that lasted for many, many weeks, because I was consuming too many carbs.

    I eat normal meals with my family, I just pass on all carbohydrate foods. I eat the meat, the salad, the veggies, etc. I love the La Tortilla Low Carb and make chicken, tuna, lunch meat wraps, etc.. I have even used these wraps to make a cheeseburger. I no longer eat bread or potatoes. I basically eat 8 or less carbohydrates per day and if I want to accelerate the weight loss, I eat fewer carbs and workout. I have tried a few recipes in the book and I like them.

    In order for me to be successful I had to simplify and make things as uncomplicated as possible. Many days of the week my days start at 3AM and I do not arrive home until 4PM.
